A unique gallery showing of our collection of Ranma carvings. These are beautifully carved pieces of functional art that were used as a transom above sliding screens throughout the Japanese home. In the words of author E. S. Morse in 1886, “The ramma requiring great skill in design and execution are those in which the wood-carver, having his design drawn upon a solid plank, cuts away all the wood about it, leaving the design free, and this is then delicately wrought.” Indeed, these 6 foot long and 2″ thick kiln dried cedar planks are “delicately wrought” to become works of art with a very practical purpose. They can become a statement piece above a doorway, wall piece above a mantle or headboard and even turned into a glass top table.
The ranma that we will have on display and for sale range in age from the late Edo (c 1850) to early Showa (c 1930). Please come and appreciate first hand the workmanship of these Japanese antiques.
